What Happens to Your Vehicle While It’s Sitting in the Driveway?

When you think about wear and tear on your vehicle, you probably picture the kilometres adding up on the odometer. More driving means more use, more fuel, more maintenance, and eventually more components that need attention.

But there is another side of vehicle ownership that is easy to overlook: your vehicle can be affected even when you are not driving it.

A vehicle that spends most of its time parked in the driveway is still exposed to the weather, temperature changes, moisture, and the natural aging of certain components. That does not mean you should worry every time your vehicle sits for a few days. Modern vehicles are designed to be parked and left unused for normal periods of time. However, if a vehicle sits for weeks or months, there are a few things worth knowing.

Your Battery Still Has Work to Do

Even when your vehicle is turned off, the battery is not completely inactive.

Modern vehicles have electronic systems that continue to draw a small amount of power while the vehicle is parked. Security systems, computers, keyless-entry systems, and other electronics may remain active in the background.

Under normal circumstances, this is not a problem. The vehicle's charging system replenishes the battery whenever you drive. But if a vehicle sits for an extended period, that small electrical draw can eventually contribute to a weakened or discharged battery.

Cold weather can make the situation more noticeable. Lower temperatures reduce a conventional 12-volt battery's ability to deliver power, which is one reason a vehicle that starts easily during the summer may struggle after sitting through a particularly cold stretch.

If you know your vehicle is going to sit for an extended period, it is worth considering how long it has been since the battery was checked and whether it is in good condition.

Tires Can Lose Pressure

Your tires do not stop changing just because your vehicle is parked.

Tire pressure naturally decreases over time, and temperature changes can affect the pressure as well. This is especially relevant when the seasons change.

A vehicle that sits in one spot for a long time can also develop what is commonly called a temporary flat spot. This can happen when the weight of the vehicle remains in the same position on the tires for an extended period.

For most drivers, occasional driving is enough to prevent this from becoming a concern. If a vehicle has been parked for a long time, however, you may notice some vibration when you first get back on the road. In many cases, it disappears as the tires return to their normal operating shape.

The simple solution is to check your tire pressures regularly, particularly before a longer drive or when temperatures change significantly.

Moisture Can Cause Problems

Water is one of the biggest enemies of a vehicle over time.

That might sound strange considering vehicles are designed to operate in rain, snow, and other harsh conditions. The important difference is that a vehicle in motion is constantly moving moisture away from various surfaces, while a vehicle that sits can remain exposed to moisture for long periods.

Rain, snow, condensation, and humidity can all contribute to moisture around the vehicle. If your vehicle is parked outside, this is simply part of normal ownership.

The brakes are one area where you may notice this quickly. After sitting overnight in damp conditions, you might hear a little noise or feel a slight difference when first applying the brakes. A light layer of surface rust can develop on brake rotors, and normal driving usually cleans it away.

If your vehicle has been sitting for an unusually long time, however, it is a good idea to pay attention to how it feels and sounds when you start driving again.

Your Brakes Don't Get a Free Pass

It is easy to assume that brakes only experience wear when you use them. While that is largely true for brake pad wear, the braking system can still be affected by sitting.

As mentioned, brake rotors can develop surface rust. In areas that experience winter weather, road salt and moisture can also contribute to corrosion over time.

That is one reason regular driving can be beneficial. It gives you an opportunity to use the vehicle's braking system and notice any changes in how it performs.

If you hear persistent grinding, notice unusual vibration, or feel that the brakes are behaving differently after a vehicle has been sitting, it is worth having them inspected rather than assuming the vehicle simply needs to be driven more.

Fluids Still Age

Your vehicle's fluids have important jobs to do, whether the vehicle is moving or not.

Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and other fluids can all age over time. Some fluids may also absorb moisture or become contaminated as they get older.

This is why vehicle maintenance schedules are generally based on both time and distance.

You may not drive very many kilometres in a year, but that does not necessarily mean maintenance can be ignored. A vehicle that travels only a few thousand kilometres annually may still require certain services based on the amount of time that has passed.

Your owner's manual is the best place to find the maintenance schedule specific to your vehicle.

Weather Is Always Working on the Exterior

Sunlight, rain, snow, ice, road salt, dirt, bird droppings, tree sap, and temperature changes can all affect a vehicle's exterior over time.

Some of these things are unavoidable, particularly in Atlantic Canada. But regular washing can help remove contaminants before they have a chance to sit on the vehicle's surfaces for extended periods.

Winter is particularly demanding. Road salt and other materials used to improve traction can accumulate underneath the vehicle and around areas exposed to road spray.

Keeping your vehicle clean, including the underside when appropriate, is one of the simplest things you can do to help protect it.

Seasonal Changes Matter

A vehicle parked outside experiences the full range of seasonal conditions.

Summer brings heat and intense sunlight. Fall can mean rain, leaves, and fluctuating temperatures. Winter brings freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and road salt. Spring introduces more moisture and often a thorough layer of winter grime.

Your vehicle is engineered to handle these conditions, but that does not mean they have no effect.

Seasonal checks are therefore a good habit. Before winter, you might check your tire pressures, battery condition, windshield washer fluid, and wiper blades. Before summer, it can be useful to inspect your tires, air conditioning performance, fluids, and overall vehicle condition.

The Best Thing You Can Do Is Drive It

Perhaps the simplest takeaway is this: vehicles are meant to be used.

You do not need to take your vehicle on a long road trip every weekend just because it has been sitting. In fact, starting the vehicle for a few minutes and letting it idle is generally not the same as actually driving it.

When you drive, the vehicle's systems reach operating temperatures, the battery receives a proper charge, the tires rotate, and the brakes are used normally.

If you have been away for an extended period, it is a good idea to take a little extra time when you return to driving. Check the tires, look underneath the vehicle for anything unusual, make sure there are no warning lights, and pay attention to how the vehicle feels.
